The “Thousand Miles Trail Movement” in Taiwan launched on April 23, 2006, which aims to connect a round-the-island trail with a network of bikeways, footpaths, and scenic trails in Taiwan. Taiwan Thousand Miles Trail Association (TMI Trail) integrates grass-roots resources of local communities, and published the 2,877 km trail, which later developed into the iconic “National Greenway” in Taiwan.
Currently, TMI Trail works with government agencies, stakeholders and volunteers, promoting Tamsui-Kavalan Trail, Raknus Selu Trail, Mountains to Sea National Greenway, and other long distances trails in Taiwan.
In the meantime, they advocate for a more eco-friendly trail maintenance method, “eco-craft trail”. By utilizing only hand-tools and manpower instead of heavy machinery, such trail building method reduces ecological disturbance, thus preserves the biodiversity and the unique historical characteristics of the trails.
