Walking the Libertadora Route
Walking the Libertadora Route – Colombia’s Historic Trek
On August 12, Colombia Trekking, a pro-nature organization and proud member of the Pan American Trails Network and the Inter-American Hiking Network, completed a remarkable event: the Walk along the Libertadora Route.

Over six days, 60 determined hikers from across Colombia and Venezuela retraced 120 km (75 miles) of the historic path between the Puente de Boyacá National Monument in Boyacá and the town of Zipaquirá in Cundinamarca. At 2,700 meters (8,860 feet) above sea level, this journey wound through the Eastern Andes, offering a deep connection to both history and nature.

This route commemorates the 1819 Liberation Campaign, a pivotal movement that united six South American nations—Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama—in their fight for independence, sowing the seeds of freedom across the continent. Along the way, hikers experienced the unique landscapes of high Andean forests, the altiplano countryside, and the iconic savanna of Bogotá.

Since 2019, the Libertadora Route has been developed as a cultural and nature tourism project, with the vision of achieving recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Looking ahead to 2027, the full 1,600 km (1000 miles) route—following in the footsteps of Simón Bolívar and General Francisco de Paula Santander—will be completed from Venezuela to Bogotá, crossing more than 30 municipalities in Colombia.

The Libertadora Route is operated by Colombia Trekking, Akixtrem Colombia Travel, Libertad Expedition, and Okama, ensuring travelers a safe and enriching experience. This initiative not only strengthens historical heritage but also creates opportunities for rural communities along the trail, integrating cultural, environmental, social, and well-being agendas. Today, the Libertadora Route stands as Colombia’s most iconic long-distance trek, a journey that unites people, landscapes, and stories of resilience.

Colombia Trekking is honored to share this passion for trails through the Pan American Trails Network and invites you to be part of this unforgettable experience.
