The new great challenge: trekking the Andes in 30 days
Can you imagine walking more than 500 kilometres (310.69 miles) along the Andes, crossing glaciers, valleys, archaeological sites, lagoons, and mountain towns?
That dream is beginning to come true with the Andes Long-Distance Trail, the first long high-mountain trail in Argentina.

This project will link Aconcagua Provincial Park (Argentina) with the Pehuenche Pass (on the Argentina–Chile border), connecting seven departments of Mendoza and some of the country’s most breathtaking landscapes: the Cordón del Plata, Tupungato, Manzano Histórico, Laguna del Diamante, and much more.

Five stages, five worlds of beauty — The main route is divided into 5 sections you can do separately (each section takes between 7 and 8 days).
Here’s the general outline:
- From Punta de Vacas to the base of the Tupungato volcano / Quebrada del Tupungato
- From Tupungato to Refugio Real de la Cruz
- From Real de la Cruz to Laguna del Diamante
- From Laguna del Diamante to Laguna del Atuel
- From Laguna del Atuel, passing through Valle Hermoso and Valle Noble, to the Pehuenche Pass.

Each area will feature rest points, authorized overnight zones, and planned services. Some zones exceed 5,300 meters above sea level, with steep elevation gains and proximity to glaciers. In summer, rivers swell and must be crossed using cables or metal carts.
Living history — Hiking this trail isn’t just adventure: you’ll be walking ancient routes. Many stretches follow paths used by Indigenous peoples, colonial muleteers (countrymen), and even the Army of the Andes led by General San Martín.
In particular, the Real de la Cruz – Laguna del Diamante – Las Loicas sector was the site of a recent archaeological survey.
When will it be ready? — The project aims to open to the public in the summer of 2026; Mendoza hopes to unveil this great gem to the world.
